Our History: Forging a Legacy of Community and Sports

Our story began in 1987 when Terry Foreman, high school basketball referee of 35 years and founding owner, had a vision to provide top-quality sports products to local schools and communities in Indiana. Terry was passionate about sports and loved working with small, rural schools, building relationships and making a difference in the lives of young athletes. He was a basketball referee for 35 years.

Terry's journey into the world of sports retail started when he was coaching JV basketball at Caston School and faced challenges finding resources for his team. This inspired him to venture into the industry. He purchased an old hardware store in Fulton, Indiana and started a trophy business. Terry reached out to a Converse representative, whom he knew from his college basketball years and The Winning Edge began carrying their first brand, becoming Converse dealers. As the business grew, Terry expanded into screen printing.

Eventually, the business outgrew the Fulton location and Terry moved into a building downtown Rochester, Indiana. Terry hit the road, visiting schools and selling sports products to high schools across Indiana. He hired Marvin Davis, who was also a referee, and together they built a reputation for providing excellent products and exceptional service to schools and athletes. 

Terry's entrepreneurial spirit and self-starter mindset led him to again, outgrowing another building which led to the new construction of our current location and the opening of the retail store here on Rouch Place Drive in Rochester.

In 2003, Terry sold The Winning Edge to family friend Brad Good. Brad, a jet pilot at the time, was looking for an opportunity that would allow him more time at home with his four children. Terry and Brad sealed the deal with a handshake agreement, based on trust and mutual respect.

Terry continued to work for Brad for 15 more years, showcasing his unwavering loyalty and commitment to The Winning Edge. During this time, Brad's son, Cory, graduated from Indiana University and decided to follow in his father's footsteps, joining the business. Terry groomed Cory to take over the reins and after 6 months of working together, Terry officially retired from The Winning Edge, marking the beginning of another chapter for the business.

With a rich history rooted in a mutual passion for sports and dedication to serving schools and communities, The Winning Edge continues to thrive under the leadership of Cory and his team. We are proud to carry on Terry's vision and legacy, providing top-quality sports products and outstanding service to schools and sports teams. The third generation of leadership looks forward to growing the business even further and providing the same quality and excellent customer service to expanded industries.
